Dev Log 006 - Setting the Scene

Setting the Scene
Out of curiosity for how future work will be carried out, as well as wanting to test the post-process in a less grey environment, I decided to set up the first room with colour and some furniture depicting a hallway to an apartment.

Here it is! I'm really happy with how it is turning out, especially with no real adjustments. The two sprites featured here (the wall painting and plant) look pretty good considering what they really look like when the post process isn't on. I could maybe do with reducing the strength of the post process' colour reduction to let the plant stand out some more, but this is something I can easily adjust down the line. The character, of course, is still a leftover stand-in from some previous animation work I was doing - the final product will have a very different character.

What was that about how the sprites look without post processing? Well...

Wow! That is low quality... and definitely not thrown together in 5 minutes! However, it does demonstrate how much heavy lifting the post processing is doing and any work I can automate or get the computer to handle drastically speeds up development. Here's that image again with the post process back on, but remember that we are far closer to the sprite than the player's camera will ever go.

Pretty cool. This means that I can increase the quantity of objects present in the game without drastically lengthening development time! But what do you think? I'm personally thinking this sprite in particular could use some highlighting, but I can tweak that down the line. For now, it seems to be working well.

But what about a room with a lighter setting? Maybe with some outdoor sunlight?

Here is just that! The next room features a brighter sky, more coloured walls, and some furniture (or boxes). It should be noted that I don't have the full narrative down out this point, and so all of this is subject to change. You can see that the furniture is much clearer here, which is why I'm being hesitant to adjust the post processing right now.

But, speaking of narrative, that is up next! I can't delay it any longer, future development is depending on an established narrative to reference while game making - onto that!
